Dumpling Club’s LNY pop-up this Sunday 1/28 from 12-6pm
Everything you need to know about our upcoming event at Wave Collective on Sunday.
See you this Sunday 1/28 at Wave Collective on Haight Street! We’ve planned an afternoon of art and food to celebrate Lunar New Year, featuring 7 local Asian American artists. Swing by anytime between 12 and 6pm and bring friends!! Read on for all the details, including the snack menu and some fun giveaways.
Here’s an interesting fact that I think a lot of Asian Americans can relate to: I’ve basically never celebrated Lunar New Year in China. I immigrated to North America when I was a little over four years old, and since then, I’ve only been able to visit China during school holidays like winter or summer break. Even when I worked at Google as a single twenty-something-year-old, my vacation time was optimized around US holidays. Leaving at the end of January for 10 days was not an option.
But every time I go back to China, no matter what time of year, my aunts and uncles say, “It’s just like celebrating the new year!” My whole family gathers for a big, raucous, joyous meal and red envelopes are handed out to all the children (previously, me and my sister; now, my kids!). We eat fish and noodles and often there’s bottles of Moutai or a local rice wine.
So for me, celebrating Lunar New Year is just that: a big gathering of people, full of love and laughter. This year I’m excited to host Lunar New Year at Wave Collective, an art gallery and cafe on Haight Street. I invited a few of my artist friends, whose work we used to carry at Dumpling Club, to join us. And I asked each of them to bring a friend… and before we knew it, we had seven incredible artists signed up to spend the afternoon with us. Then I reached out to the Dumpling Club crew and we planned a whole menu of sweet and savory snacks for everyone to enjoy during the event. We’ve been meeting virtually for weeks now, trading comments on Google Docs, and chatting across Instagram and WhatsApp, and I am looking forward to seeing everyone (and all of YOU) in person tomorrow!
WHAT / WHEN / WHERE
Join us this Sunday January 28
Swing by anytime between 12-6pm
Wave Collective, 663 Haight Street in San Francisco
We will have an art mart set up in Wave Collective’s bright and cozy sunroom, featuring a wide range of artwork and gifts:
In the back garden, we’ll be handing out free coloring pages with Lunar New Year artwork by Felicia Liang (first come, first served, and limited to one per household). Markers and other decorating materials will be on the tables should you be so inspired 😉
The artists have generously donated pieces for a raffle: if you purchase at least $15 worth of art, we will automatically enter you in the raffle to win a collection of pieces worth over $135. Every $15 you spend will earn one entry into the raffle. Just make sure to give us your email at the register. We’ll draw the winner next week and contact them by email to arrange for delivery or shipping of the grand prize.
